The Industrial Waste Management Association (www.iwma.in) was formed on the directive of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to establish facilities for the safe and scientific disposal of the hazardous solid wastes from industries as per the Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules and the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
Established in 2002, IWMA has facilitated the establishment and operation of a Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF) through a Service Provider for industries in Tamil Nadu. IWMA currently has 3,677 member industries of different sectors within Tamil Nadu.
The Association aims to become the leading facilitator for environmental management towards Sustainable Development of industries and their stakeholders.
IWMA conducts periodical review of the CHWTSDF site operations Currently 3 sites at Gummidipoondi, Bargur and one at Virudhunagar) are in operation. Besides the audit of the landfill site operation, IWMA conducts seminars, webinars and training programs on the recent waste management rules & amendments, environmental updates & trends, sustainability, wastewater treatment, waste management etc.
IWMA offers consultancy services to members industries in partnership with Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT M), Confederation of Indian Industry – Green Business Centre (CII-GBC), PSG College of Technology, CUBE-IIT Madras on environment related problems, through its dedicated team. IWMA supports its member industries to obtain GreenCo certification and to carry out energy assessments for their plants.
IWMA also conducts “ENVIRO” program in collaboration with Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) to promote the environmental awareness among schoolchildren. In addition, IWMA also conducts “Young Environmental Scientist (YES)” program under the guidance of IIT M faculty to inculcate research interest in schoolchildren.
IWMA hosts another event titled “E-waste Awareness and Collection,” a CSR initiative held in Chennai in partnership with TES-AMM India Pvt Ltd.
Mr K. Baskaran has served as an Executive Member and presently is the Chairman of IWMA. He is A6 District Chairperson for E-Waste Management in Lions Club.
The Chairman is the CEO of Aarthi Industries – an electroplating unit located in Vallam & Padappai. And also a member of Donstia.
